Biography

I'm located in South Western Ohio in the small town of Miamisburg, USA – just several blocks from 540 Richard Street, which for many years was the headquarters of the world-famous "R. L. Drake Radio Company". I've been involved with amateur radio since 1976, receiving the novice call sign of WN8CDW, which later changed to WD8CDW when the FCC dropped the special novice designation.

1964-1967. US Navy, Radioman. I served on 3 WestPac tours with duty on numerous Aircraft Carriers at Yankee Station in the South China Sea with COMCARDIV 3 (Commander Carrier Division 3). I served aboard the USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) when it transferred from Norfolk, VA to the 7th Fleet in November of 1965 for duty in Vietnam. On that long voyage, many of the ship's crew underwent the celebrated "Shellback" ceremony for crossing the Equator. Escorted to Subic Bay in the Philippines by the USS Bainbridge (DLGN-25), both the USS Enterprise and USS Bainbridge were the 1st nuclear-powered vessels of their class to be commissioned in the US Navy.

• Extra-class radio amateur license since 1990

• My son Joe WS8X, is an extra-class amateur serving on active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard
