Biography

Mahalo for viewing my page.

First licensed as WH6CHJ in 1991 as a Novice with code. Within a year upgraded to Tech with code (changed call to WH6EY), then General with code, Advanced with code, then finally to Extra Class. Took a short break from the hobby (18 and half years), got back on the air on January 29, 2020.

Active with Digital modes, FT4 and FT8. (UPDATE May 16, 2022) Finally have FT8 WAS on 9 Bands, 80m, 60m, 40m, 30m, 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m and 10m. Rhode Island on 60m was the last and toughest one to work and get confirmed. Worked 171 countries so far. All this on an 80m horizontal delta loop at 35 feet. Now that the bands are opening up, getting more active on Phone. I have added a 30 plus year old Cushcraft A4S at 30ft to help with 10m, 15m and 20m.

Started activately chasing POTA stations in January of 2022 on both Phone and Digital modes. Primarily a hunter, I've started doing activations here on the island of Kauai the beginning of September 2022. Right now in my truck I use and ICOM IC-7300, old Hustler Antenna resonators I got back in the '90s, on a Hustler Antenna 54" fold over mast on a Tram 3 magnet mount on the roof. I use a 30ah Bioenno battery for power and a Dell laptop for the digital modes. I do mostly digital modes during my activations, but as conditions get better, I'm doing more SSB from the parks. I have done 15 successful activations from 5 different parks. K-2226, K-6408, K-6424, K-2215 and K-2223.

To everyone that has contacted me, I greatly appreciate every single contact I've made with you. I do enjoy repeat contacts, even if it's on the same band and mode. I never turn away a call. Never used "QSO B4" on the digital modes and never will. If you see me on the air, call, I will answer you if I hear you.

73 and warm Aloha from the island of Kauai, John, WH6EY
