Biography

Vojin G. Oklobdzija

fist started building radio receivers around 1960. By the time I graduated from the elementary school in 1962 I already built 3-tube direct reciever (audion). Joined radio club YU1BKL and obtained a license (third category)around that time and got a call sign about 1964 as YU1OAW. (at that time - had to be a "second category" operator to hold own call-sign, first- category equivalent to Extra, second to General, third to Techncian)

Build his first radio station 1964: transmiter of about 80W with 807 tube in the final PA stage. Do not remember receiver... probably direct. Everything was my own design. I was in high-school at the time.

Started as a student of Electronics and Telecommunications, School of Electrical and Telecomunication Engineering, University of Belgrade in 1966. Had to stop playing wih Ham Radios in order to study. Graduated in 1971, in addition acquiring a degree in Physics. Started as Research Physicist at the Institute of Physics, Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Gave up Ham Radio.

Came to USA in 1976 as Fulbright Scholar. Finshed PhD in Computer Science at UCLA in 1982 and joined IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, working on very first RISC processors. Obtained several patents on the first IBM RISC followed by Super-Scalar RISC, IBM RS/6000. Holder of the patent on "Register-Renaming" which enabled the new genaration of modern super-scalar processors. Became IEEE Fellow in 1996 for that invention.

Re-started Ham Radio around 1984 (due to a neighbor who was a Ham). Passed all exams in one day and walked out as Extra. This was at the time when 20wpm was required. Obtained a call sign: NI2O. Moved to Califronia in 1988 to teach at the University of California Berkeley. My license and call expired around 1994.

Moved to New Mexico (temporary) and thanks to a friend WA5DJJ got into the radio again. Had to take all exams again, and again in one day passed them all and walked out as Extra - this time AF5BK. Chased a "vanity call" and got WF1A (can not get any better).

Back in Berkeley - have vertical Cushcraft R6000 and Inv V multiband, erected on the trees using bow and arrow technology :). Recently I added Hig-Gain 3-el beam with Yaesu G-800DXA rotator. I also added another station on the Big Island of Hawaii where also have QRPP Tx operating QRSS, as well as WSPR signals - you can see it at various grabbers. Have a realy good shot to pacific, NZ and Australia from here.

Now - WF1A (until the licence, or I expire). This is my story.
