Biography

Prior to moving to Aiken, for several years (last sunspot maximum) I operated in an antenna-restricted townhouse community on the 80-10 meter HF bands and 2 meter VHF band. My antennas were all in the attic of my townhouse. For 40 meters I used a "Slinky" antenna 24 ft. long. On 20-10 meters I used sets of fan dipoles. My 80 meter antenna was a short (30 ft) tophat loaded vertical. A vertical wire ran from the building soffit to the ground just outside the basement shack. The tophat is a wire loop layed on the attic floor. Four buried ground radials completed the antenna. For more information and pictures, see my web site. On 2 meters there was an attic mounted J-pole. I have also successfully used an AEA Isoloop antenna in the attic. My country total with these simple antennas is 113 worked in all modes, 84 confirmed.

My other interests include Linux software and bicycle racing.
