Biography

Greetings from the Sandhills and thanks for taking time to stop by my page. My journey in to two-way radio started in the 1970s during the CB craze. As a young teen, I would stay on the radio for hours talking to my friends and neighbors. That was fun for a few years but I slowly lost interest in radio. Many years later, I decided to try for my ham license. I passed my Novice test in 1989 and then a couple months later I received my Technican and then General ticket. I finally moved up to Advanced class in 1991. Since the Advanced class is no longer available, I have no plans to upgrade to Extra.

In 2005, I took a 16 year hiatus from the hobby and WOW! how things had changed in that time period. Antennas, SDR transceivers to the new digital modes. That was quite a surprise how advanced they had become. In the shack I have a mixture of older and newer radios. I still like the ones that have knobs and buttons. I enjoy DX'ing, going to hamfests, operating field day, putting up wires, homebrewing beams and catching signals from every corner of the globe. The picture on the left is my homebrew cubical quad I built several years ago. It was a 4 element, 5 band on a 30 foot fiberglass boom. I would like one day to build another one. They are terrific antennas.

I enjoy working digital modes, cw and having a good old-fashioned ragchew on SSB. Occasionally you can also find me working local repeaters and ragchewing on DMR and d-star here in SE NC. When traveling I take my OpenSpot4 with me so I can keep in contact with friends. I have been an Elmer to several new hams and really like sharing my experience of ham radio to all I come in contact with. I have made many life long friendships through amateur radio. If you need my county or grid square, let me know and we can setup a sked.

DX Code Of Conduct

dx code of conduct small logoI support the "DX Code Of Conduct" to help to work with each other and not each against the others on the bands.
