Biography
Hello there! My name is MichaelO'Riley, and I’m an enthusiastic amateur radio operator and dedicated IT professional. My journey into the world of ham radio began in May 2007 when I earned my Technician License in Cadillac, MI, with a little help from my father-in-law, Gordon W8CT. Just a month later, I was thrilled to test for my General Class License in Hudsonville, MI, and I passed with flying colors! The pursuit of knowledge didn’t stop there; after months of diligent studying, I proudly obtained my Amateur Extra License in December 2007.
I owe a huge debt of gratitude to both Gordon W8CT and the late Ray N8KWR, whose generosity set me on the path of collecting equipment for my ham shack. Today, I am fortunate to own some fantastic gear, including a Yaesu FT1000MP, an FT-710, an Ameritron AL-80B linear amplifier, and a Palstar AT4K tuner. For my VHF/UHF operations, I rely on the reliable Yaesu FT8900, which has never let me down!
In my backyard, I’ve set up a homebrew 160-meter inverted "L" antenna, along with a 40-meter vertical, both expertly designed by Gordon W8CT. I find immense joy in spending my time on the bands, particularly on 160, 75, and 40 meters, where I love to connect with fellow operators using both phone and digital modes. There’s something incredibly rewarding about making those contacts, and I look forward to sharing ideas and stories with other enthusiasts!
When I’m not on the air, I serve as a Director of IT during the day, navigating the fast-paced world of technology. However, my evenings are dedicated to being a dad to my three beautiful daughters. Balancing work and family life is truly fulfilling, though I must admit that my hobbies sometimes get squeezed in between! My passion for amateur radio is ever-growing, and I’m currently diving into learning CW (Continuous Wave). I’m eager to master this mode and connect with others using it soon!
In addition to ham radio, I love sports and try to catch a game whenever I can find the time. There’s something special about the thrill of competition, whether I’m playing or just cheering from the sidelines.
I can’t wait to connect with you down the log! Let’s keep the airwaves buzzing!
