Biography

Was first Novice Class licensed in high school in 1952 as WN5DMH (QTH Tyler, TX) and earned WAS running 50 watts CW with a WRL Globe Scout transmitter and a Hallicrafters S-38C receiver. Then Conditional Class licensed as W5DMH in 1954 until 1973 when I became Advanced Class licensed as W6RMG (QTH San Francisco, CA). In 1978 I became W8LOV (QTH Columbus, OH) and ran a Yaesu FT-101B and a home built Heathkit SB-220 linear into a 2 element 3 band cubical quad antenna at 90 feet. Worked DX and collected about 120 DXCC confirmed countries. In 1984 moved back to San Francisco to raise two children with my wife Judy and continue my career as an investment banker. Retired in 2000 and moved to San Diego and became Extra Class licensed as W6OJ.

I’m now getting active again in ham radio again (2020) working FT8 and 20/40 meter SSB running an ICOM 7300 into a 20’ flagpole vertical and will likely add a linear amplifier in the near future. MY HOA doesn't allow large ham antennas so my operating is, of course, hampered by a future of mediocre antennas.

Attended Texas A&M and the University of North Texas and have degrees in business and mathematics. I’m a US Navy Vietnam veteran. Over the years my hobbies have been golf, sailboating, US Navy league and collecting jazz recordings. I’m Treasurer of our HOA and on the board of our local jazz radio station KSDS-FM 88.3.

Married to the former Judy Allen who was raised in St.Paul, MN and is a University of Minnesota graduate.
