Biography

First licensed as a Technician with the sequential call KO4VVN in January 2022, I acquired my current callsign out of respect for Gerald Warr (SK), the original holder of W4UTZ. I was inactive until the Summer of 2024 when I built a QRP Labs QDX-M kit for the 10m band and started making contacts with FT8/FT4. In Spring 2025, I upgraded to Extra and took on the challenge of restoring a neglected Kenwood TS-830S hybrid transceiver.

That TS-830S is now in regular service using a fan dipole in the attic with 10m and 20m legs, interfacing with the shack PC through direct soundcard connections and a serial PTT circuit. I still work primarily FT8/FT4 but can sometimes be heard using SSB, RTTY, and MSK144. I am now working to add AM capabilities to the station by way of a Johnson Viking II transmitter and Hammarlund HQ-129X receiver.

I upload all QSOs, all modes to LOTW, QRZ, and Club Log; I don't actively use eQSL or QRZCQ, but both are periodically updated as well for the benefit of others using the platforms. Once I have gotten paper cards designed and printed I will respond in kind to all I have received.
