Biography

Hello and welcome to my page! My name is Dean, W2QJ, and I am a passionate amateur radio operator. Let me share my journey with you.

I embarked on my amateur radio adventure in December 2018 when I acquired my Ham operator license. Eager to expand my knowledge and capabilities, I upgraded to the General license in April 2019. I studied diligently with the help of my friend Rick K2XT and Lou W1QJ to obtain my Extra Class license, which I achieved on July 19, 2022. This ongoing pursuit of knowledge is a testament to my dedication to the world of radio communications.

My fascination with electronics and radio communications began at the age of 14. In the mid to late 70s and early 80s, during the CB craze, I immersed myself in the world of CB radio. While my attempts to learn Morse code were not successful at that time, I encountered several mentors on CB who generously shared their wisdom and expertise. They took me under their wings, sparking my interest in electronics and guiding me towards working DX stations on AM and SSB.

During those early years, I yearned for more opportunities to learn and grow within the realm of radio. Unfortunately, the Ham operators I encountered were predominantly older individuals who lacked the inclination to teach or mentor a young enthusiast like myself. Nevertheless, my passion persisted, even as life took me on different paths.

With my children now older and a bit more free time on my hands, I decided to revisit my long-standing interest in amateur radio. And so, I took the leap and obtained my Ham license, reigniting my enthusiasm for DXing and connecting with fellow radio enthusiasts around the globe. On August 8, 2022, I proudly embraced a new call sign, transitioning from KD3ANX to W2QJ. This change reflected my dedication to expanding my knowledge and skills within the amateur radio community.

As an amateur radio operator, I continue to relish the joy of DXing, exploring new frequencies, and connecting with like-minded individuals who share my passion for radio communications. I am grateful for the opportunities and friendships this hobby has provided me and look forward to the exciting advancements and experiences that lie ahead.

Thank you for visiting my page, and feel free to reach out if you share a love for amateur radio or have any questions about this fascinating world of communication. 73s and best wishes from W2QJ!

Currently I am running a Elecraft K3, KPA1500 and a Mosley Pro57B.
