Biography

G'day, my name is Dale and I live in Adelaide South Australia. I consider myself a geek, tinkerer, and a hacker. I have been using Linux on and off since 1998, but since about 2005 it has been my primary operating system of choice and Debian my preferred distribution, but I using a fork called Devuan at moment as it has no systemd.

I have been into amateur radio for a long time, but only in April 2011 I got my ticket. Also have an interest in tinkering with electronics and collecting World War Two era wireless sets. I am rather fond of the clandestine sets of the era like the ‘Type A Mk III’. I am also fond of the the wireless set WS 122 which is a Australian miltary radio that was produced in 1945 in Adelaide and Melbourne.

Since 2011 I have helped out WICEN with communications for the Scouts RallySA. I also help by promoting Amateur Radio at events like Science Alive, and Adelaide Mini makers Faire.

Since late 2020 I have gotten into some the digital, I have built myself a couple hotspots with MMDVM hats on Raspberry Pi 3B+ & Zero 2 W's running W0CHP (WPSD) Dashboard to access the DMR networks, you can find me on talkgroups 505 or 969 on FreeDMR. I also setup DMR2YSF cross-over on one my hotspots so to be able to connect to YSF reflectors as needed, I currently not sitting on a particular reflector, but you can call on reflector 50535 which is on the Pride Radio Group multimode network which will come out on FreeDMR talkgroup 969 I monitor.

Since Sept. 2023 I have started to get into M17 and have purchased bits to be able to archive this with the likes of Module17, also building a M17 mini repeater out of a hotspot running the W0CHP (WPSD) Dashboard. I doing this all a long with a friend VK3JED, we both building very similar systems that we then can demo to our local clubs and hamfests etc. I do monitor M17 via via ASL 21997 which is bridged to M17-432 C. I am hoping to do pure M17 not long after my Module17 arrives.

As for my fur baby, her name is Nikita (named after the movie "La Femme Nikita" as this was the movie on TV the night I bought her home). I found her stuffed between a lounge cushion and the arm for the lounge in the carport of where my mother was living. At that time is was only about 4 weeks old and still with baby blue eyes, when I picked her up she hissed at me and I bought her home and did all the things a mother would do for her. I have now had her for 10 great years. She is the will not eat canned cat food, it has to be what on my plate from roasted chicken, steak to, chilli & cheese sausages this what started her off and I was very surprised.

Notes:

When working my station on FT8 etc please use split transmission ie have "TX/RX Split" or "Hold TX Freq" checked

I reset my JTDX log on the 1st January every year, so it will be like working you again for the first time as far as JTDX is concerned.

FT8 contacts that are not finished with either RR73 or 73 by both stations, so be polite and sign off the contact correctly. Otherwise I will not be logging the contact and you will have just wasted both yours and my time.
