Biography

I became interested in Electronics at an early age of 6 years. Recovered old TV sets and broadcast radios and built radio projects from the age of 8 years. I Owned several shortwave receivers and did qsling with commercial broadcast stations worldwide.I went to University and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1972.I took the ham exam in 1974 and within 3 weeks had taken and passed the advanced class license.I Used a Model 12 and 15 teletype unit and flying spot scanners for SSTV during this time period. I went abroad and worked in Saudi Arabia on Oil and gas installations for 15 years. During this time I was a guest operator at HZ1AB in Dhahran Saudi Arabia. This was a RAAF unit on the airbase in AlKhobar Saudi Arabia. In 1996 I left Saudi and did worldwide work starting up automated systems in the Paper industry. I Was able to work ham radio from many different countries. I met my wife in 1998 via Internet and came to live in Australia in late 1999. I immediately applied for recipocal licencing and received the call VK3FML. Later on I received my Advanced call VK3XZ which I now hold as well as VK8XZ(retired call) . I work mostly digital modes and like SSB as well. Very active on 15 and 20 meters on all Digital modes, especially JT65 and JT9. I use a Yaesu FTDX1200 Tranceiver,Elad SDR x2,FC20 Automatic tuner, Heathkit SB200 Amplifier,Drake L4B Amplifier, Tet Emtron TE33 3elemet 10-15-20 meter beam at 12 meters height,also TH6DXX beam at 12 Meters height, and a Trapped rotating dipole for WARC bands as well as an MFJ Soudcard Interface and MFJ Multicom software. I am very active on all Digital Modes especially JT65,JT9,PSK31,SIM31,FT8,FT8Call and RTTY. I am a member of the Southside ARS Radio Group in Brisbane, Australia. I can be found most days and weekends from 2200GMT until about 0700 GMT daily on 14075 and 18.102 FT8, 14.070 0r 21.070 PSK: 14.076 MT65, 14.078 MT9; 10.138 JT65/9 14.082 RTTY 73's Mike VK3XZ
