HELLO FELLOW HAMS

As a youth I was influenced by my Dad, Howard Nessel VE6VW and VE8SS (SK). He was a signals operator in the service and a great ham radio operator! In his shack I had my own spot where I had a RCA AR-88 receiver and listened to the phone side of the bands in the mid and late 1960's. Too many stories to tell here! As time passed I got interested in CB (11 meters) and kept busy building beams and inverted V's, adding power, (one can never have enough of that!HI HI ...) to my rigs SIGNAL and working the world on my CB. More time elapsed and the ham radio bug got me. I passed my Basic and Advanced Amateur Radio tests and was licensed in 1991. Another great ham VE8SM Stew Monro was my Elmer in Hay River. He was my “go to” guy for help". My station went up on the south shore of the Great Slave Lake, In the subdivision of West Channel in the town of Hay River.

I built a homebrew X beam for 20 meters, A 80 meter folded dipole and a 40 meter inverted V. My rig was a FT-767 coupled to a SB 200 and tuner. The good old days were filled with DX back then! That was the start of my ham radio interest from many different locations:Lutsel KE', Nortwest Territories, Saskatoon Saskatchewan, Fort Chipewyan, Alberta and now Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. In Fort Chipewyan, Alberta There were but 8 hams in my small town of 1200 pepole, Wire antennas were common with our group and this was the beginning of my interest in digital and more advanced radio configurations via satellite UHF. Our club call was VE6YPY.(THE LITTLE BIT SOUTH OF 60' RADIO SCIENCE CLUB)

NOW IN Yellowknife NT

It’s now 2020 and the world is suffering from Covid 19. My current humble shack is in the corner of our front room apartment in Yellowknife. I put up a home brew vertical and use an LDG 600 watt remote antenna tuner. Rig is a Kenwood TS-480 SAT, and A self Biult PC, I mostly do FT-8 and sometimes SSB as conditions have been horrible up here for a long time.
