It all started at the age of 15 while attending the third grade of High school. Our Science teacher asked us to construct a small circuit that would include a battery and a switch turning on and off a light bulb.
The subject was electricity. I turned to my neighbor Kostantinos for help who was into electronics.
He was an officer of the Greek Navy serving on Destroyers as a radio operator.
We soon became friends and I started helping him with his constructions. Eventually I started building my own electronic Kits.
Konstantinos became a radio amateur as SV1ALM and I was introduced to the fascinating world of ham radio.
Back then to become a radio amateur you had to pass the exams that included CW. At the time this sounded too difficult for me!
Time went by and I followed a career in Aviation maintenance becoming a JAR 66 Licensed Aircraft Engineer. I was an active Air band listener in the time being until my colleague Evangelos with whom we have the same age and same hobbies proposed that we should get our license and become radio amateurs.
I took some lessons with SV1NK Makis who is a great teacher at the RAAG headquarters and studied the necessary material for the exams.
So here I am after acquiring my license in 2014. I briefly occupied myself in 2015 with HF communications. Then the lack of space inside the house after having 2 lovely boys with my wife took me away from the hobby again.
In 2020 I returned on the air trying to establish my station again….
Building antennas and trying different aspects of the hobby!
I particularly enjoy receiving ISS SSTV images.
I also operate as SV8/SV1QVA from my alternative QTH.
Either the island of Aegina from Kipseli village or the island of Evia from the town of Karystos.
I also try portable operation as SV1QVA/P.
I like to collect paper QSL cards. If you have one please send it with the most convenient method you prefer.
I particularly enjoy aircraft plastic modelling, woodworking, mountain hiking, swimming among other things. Too many interests but not enough time and only one life.
