Biography

General background

I was born in 1952 and have been an active SWL during late 1960's and 1970's. I received my first radio amateur licence in 1973 with the call OH1GC (in Ikaalinen) and the upgraded general glass licence in 1974. As OH3EZ my active period was from 1975 to 1987 (in Tammela and Tampere) both on HF and VHF. After a very long QRT period of 1988-2020 I have now returned to HF bands at the end of 2020. Member of SRAL (The Finnish Amateur Radio League) since 1973.

Interested in the SRAL 100 years -award? See https://www.sral.fi/english/

M.Sc. (Electrical Engineering) 1979 and D.Sc. (Biomedical engineering) 1984 from the Tampere University of Technology (TUT). Working from 1985 to 2002 for VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland) and from 2002 to 2018 for TUT and Tampere University. At the moment I am still working part-time for the Tampere University (https://www.tuni.fi/en).

I am spending time by building electronic devices, rigs, antennas and updating my stations here in the city of Tampere (150 km north from Helsinki) and in Ruovesi at our summer villa (100 km north from Tampere). Because there is more space for antennas I hope to build there a mast with some beam antennas for the improving working conditions during the approaching sun spot maximum! A remote operation of the station is also on my wish-list.

In addition to the radio amateur hobby, I am scuba diving, kayaking, hiking, and motobiking with my Kawasaki VN900 Classic.

Worked DXCCs:

Equipment

Equipment:
- Icom IC-7300 transceiver + MAAS SPS-8250 power supply
- MST3 QRP homemade transceiver with a digital VFO for 80m, 5-8W, see http://www.ozqrp.com/. First QSOs on 80 m in Feb 18; tnx fr rprts and comments OH2GVA, OH2BPU and OH2BO. 80 m is ready, 40 m and 20 m bands will come later.
- Alinco DJ-580 portable FM transceiver for145 and 433 MHz
- Airspy HF/VHF SDR Receiver & SDR# software
- RTL-SDR R820Y2 Dongle 500 kHz - 1.75 GHz
- Tecsun PL-660 Receiver

Antennas:
- End fed 23 m long-wire antenna for 10/(15)/20/40/80 meter band (HF Kits); about 5 m above the ground (140 m above the sea level). This is a very interesting antenna. I have received good reports from around Europe using only 100 W!
- Diamond CP-6SR 6-band vertical antenna. Good for higher than 7 MHz, not useful in 80 m band (too narrow pass band).
- Hari Windom 80-10m 42m (WIMO) (not yet installed).
