Biography

Born in mix sixties (vintage 1966), I got the lifelong bug for ham radio in the junior highschool introduced by oh1rg (sk). After tedious studies of morse code and the electronics, I received my novice license February -82 and my callsign, oh1jd, registered in May -82.Some 8 months months and, that time compulsory minimum of 300 CW qsos in crystal fixed frequencies on 80/40/15 later, I received my Extra -class license in the dawn of -83.

As it is all about antennas, as soon as I got my license, I raised my first tower, an eight meter tall telephone pole extended with nine meters of 60 mm galvanized pipe and a 3 element 15 meter yagi...what a weapon ! This was followed quickly by an 18 meter triangular tower with 15 and 20 meter yagis...what a beauty in the densely populated residential area. Neighbors agreed better than my parents as the monster was painted on the living room floor at the time of their two week absense one summer.I still hear about that event!

During my early years I was aslo active in maintaining and operating OH1AA, then very active contest and dx club. As I acquired my countryside location, things kind of moved to my own yard where one of the first things were a 42 -meter rotating tower with antennas for my favorite bands, 10,15,20 and 40. This lasted until 2002 when I moved to Shanghai, China where I resided until 2010. The 42 meter had been taken down and sold on 2002 upon my departure so I had to get something more and called OH8LQ who builds the larger towers in Finland and got a 48 -meter rotating tower with capacity for larger, better arrays... Signal IS and while the antennas are the main contributors I am also looking into the amplifiers to do the rest of the job; with clean spectrum that is...

While getting better signal in the conventional bands has been my main interest in the ham radio, I have also been active in operating the station. HF contests are my main interest and while not always able to run fulltime, I am trying to focus my operating in these busy weekends. Morning and nighttimes are my primetime and that is when you would be able to find me in these six bands.

I have been operating in several stations in Finland and Aland islands but also in China where I had an opportunity to operate from B7P (Guangzhou) and BY4DX (Shanghai). 2007-2010 I was also on the air from China through Internet and remote radio for which I acquired Tentec OMNI VII, wonderful radio . This was installed at my OH-qth feeding a simple G5RV; wonderful setup which I used also in my business travels around asia that time. Hotel rooms were much more comfortable with N4PY -interface and the internet connection !

The callsigns that I currently hold are OH1JD, OH1D and OG1D.

If you want to know more, hook up with me on the bands and ask !
