Biography

Hello, I'm Gytis, LY3VD,

My journey into the captivating world of amateur radio began in 1999. After a very active decade, I took a long break, but the magic of the airwaves called me back in 2024. My return to the hobby has been a fantastic journey of rediscovery and technical advancement.

Equipment

When I first got back on the air, I started with a modest setup: an Icom IC-746 transceiver and a simple magnetic loop antenna from Aliexpress. Operating with this gear, primarily using CW and my microphone, presented its own set of challenges. However, the thrill of making contacts under difficult conditions was incredibly rewarding. My very first contact after an eight-year hiatus was on July 28, 2024, with a station in the Netherlands on the 14 MHz band.

That moment, hearing my signal being returned, confirmed that the passion for HAM radio was back, stronger than ever.
Over the past year, I've dedicated myself to improving my station. I'm excited to share that

I've significantly upgraded my equipment. My primary rig is now the formidable Yaesu FTdx101MP, a top-tier transceiver that has opened up new possibilities. For my HF operations I use a high-quality OK2ER magnetic loop antenna. Additionally, for the 2-meter band, I use a Diamond VX-4000 VHF Omni vertical antenna. Both of these antennas are located on my balcony, a testament to what can be achieved even with limited space. My trusty Icom IC-746 is now dedicated to my VHF work with the new vertical antenna.

A cherished part of my hobby is collecting QSL cards, which I prefer to exchange via the bureau. This is more than just a hobby for me; it's a family affair. Each card we receive is a tangible confirmation of a connection made, a real piece of a conversation that traveled across countries and continents. We eagerly await each new card, as it represents a unique story and a new friend on the air.

My QSL card proudly features Vilnius, the beautiful capital of Lithuania. If you'd like to add it to your collection, please send your QSL card via the bureau or directly.
See you on the air!
73, Gytis, LY3VD
