Repeater information

Biography

Ham Radio has been a major part of my life since Jan. 1958. I started as a novice with KN4TQR and quickly moved up to an extra class. I am active on 3965 KHz for the morning Alabama Net and do quite a bit of 40 and 20 CW. I operate CW mobile on trips while my wife Margaret, KD4AGU reads, knits or listens to the radio.Wives can be a little jellous of the radio so I have to pick my times of operation, .. Hi. I can be found between 7025 and 7040 KHz or around 14060 KHz.
I have a 6 meter beacon, K4TQR/B that has been on the air for 14 years operating 45 watts on 50.060 MHz. I have gotten quite a few eQSL and mail QSLs from the beacon. The furtherest being Belgium with a 459 report. I also operate a 444.100 and 224.220 repeater here in Birmingham, AL.
I enjoy operating maritime mobile on cruise ships in the Caribbean and have made two voyages working 20 and 40 CW making contacts with 16 countries and 26 states. I find it neat to see my call on the DXBBs. I use a modified MFJ 1910 telescoping fiberglass pole with a fly casting reel attached holding 61 feet of flexable antenna wire. A Yaesu FT-450 and a LDG AT-100Pro make a great combination for this operation. The 1910 folds down to 4 feet and the radio, tuner and MFJ switching supply will fit nicely into a backpack.
RVing portable is also a great way to enjoy Ham Radio. I use an Allen Bond telescoping 40 foot mast mounted to the back of my 5th wheel with a SG 237 tuner, 66 feet of wire and my FT-450. There is no frequency that this wont cover well.
I have operated in the Republic of Ireland, EI4VNP, England, G0K4TQR and Belgium, ON8UM on the many trips I have made there.
As you can see from my first sentence Ham Radio has been a major part of my life for the 54 years I have been a Ham.
Thanks for stopping by. Hope we meet on the air sometime.
