I have enjoyed amateur radio since I was granted my Novice license in 1963 at the age of 16. I got my General ticket shortly thereafter. We didn't have much money so my first rig was built on a piece of wood! I used wooden dowels as stand-offs to mount the tube socket. Except for the crystal, all of the electronic parts came from donated radios and TVs. Our basement was littered with them. It turned out to be a great learning experience and led to a 44 year career in commercial broadcasting.
I upgraded to Extra class in 1976 and operated mostly DX using a Yaesu FT-301S, a Johnson Viking Thunderbolt amplifier and a 2 element quad. The quad is long gone but I still have the transceiver and amp.
Raising a family diverted my attention over the following years, but in 2008 I got back into ham radio. I enjoy the hobby more than ever now that I'm retired. I operate phone and CW. My current setup is a Yaesu FT-950 and VL-1000 amplifier. I use wire antennas for 6 meters and the lower bands and a Moseley CL33WARC beam for 20 through 10 meters. I am also active on 2 meters with a Yaesu FT-2900R and Hustler G7 at 35 feet.
