Biography
Licensed as a Novice in June of 1991 I grew up with Ham Radio. At age 5 my brother and dad were both licensed. I was always welcome in the shack, at field days, hamfests and other Ham Radio events. I obtained my Extra (AA2IO) in February of 1992. I was primarily a CW operator until I got over my mic shyness and started chasing DX. I’m a member of the Rochester (NY) DX Association as well as a couple other clubs. In June of 1995 I married N2NEP (now W7ZQ) on Field Day weekend at the vacation QTH of K2DB up in the Adirondacks area of NY state on Hickory Lake.
I’m off and on active on HF in various modes. I’m also active occasionally on 6m and 2m weak signal work, the OM’s domain. I also enjoy the occasional EchoLink QSO and nets.
I have several other hobbies that keep me busy. I’m hoping to spend some time in the workshop this winter with some Arduino stuff and learn something new. The OM is the builder and experimenter at this QTH.
We’ve various rigs and equipment but my favorite for HF is the trusty Kenwood TS940S-AT and a homebrew (built by the OM) amp with a pair of 3CX800s-7 Eimac tubes into a Cushcraft tri-band up on a small tower, various wires and a ground mounted vertical.
I’m mostly active on CW, SSB, and RTTY as a member of RTTY Rangers run by W1TY. CU in the pileups!
