Biography

I became aTechnician/General in February 2019. One of my sons took the test as well and got his Technician license at the same time. I managed to get my Extra in November 2019. I wanted to get a vanity callsign and was able to get my new callsign in January 2020 from the previous call KN4SPX.

My radio is an Icom 7300 with the use of my Ameritron AL-80A amp. My main antenna is an 80 meter off center dipole with the longer leg being 88 1/2 feet long and 65 feet high. The OFCD is broadside to east/west. The shorter leg is 43 1/2 feet long on the shorter leg and 40 feet high. I recently added a 20 meter modified G5RV - the ZS6BKW. Each leg is 45 feet long going into 41 feet of window line, balun and coax. The higher point is up about 70+ feet and slopes down to a 40 foot tree.. This antenna is broadside to east/west. It is interesting to hear from stations,at various locations, telling me which antenna is stronger to them.

I enjoy the hobby and try to get on the air when propagation is cooperative. I tend to stay around 40 meters but venture to 20 meters as well (I think I will be visiting 20 meters more now that I have my second antenna).

FT8 is also a lot of fun. I've been able to get quite a few countries that I haven't been able to on SSB.
