Biography

My name is Todd David Olsen, "The Night Owl", "Grasshopper", K1TDO.

I passed my Amateur Extra Class license exam on March 20th, 2016. I am now an Amateur Extra Class licensed operator. I became a member of the Meriden Amateur Radio Club when I lived at my parents house in Cheshire, CT USA. My Ten-Ten # is 72725. I was awarded Ham of the Year by the Meriden Amateur Radio Club in 2012. I am a Primary Net Control Station for the Meriden Amateur Radio Club on the 147.360 MHZ repeater +600 KHZ on Tuesday evenings at 7 PM local time. Then I moved to Pulaski Terrace in Plantsville, CT USA and sold all of my equipment.

I became a member of the Southington Amateur Radio Association shortly after moving to Plantsville. I am now a Primary Net Control Station for the Southington Amateur Radio Association on the KB1AEV linked repeater system on Wednesday evenings at 8:45 PM local time (except when the club has a meeting on the last Wednesday of the month).

I sold my Kenwood TS-940S and on February 7, 2017 I purchased myself a Yaesu FT-450D from Gigaparts dot com. The G5RV antenna I had at my parents house in Cheshire, CT really liked 20 Meters so I spent most of my time making contacts there but my Rocket 88 antenna here in Plantsville, CT really likes 40 Meters so I now spend most of my time there. I like to go on 80 Meters at night and listen to the rag chewers. I also like to listen to the SkyWarn Nets during snow storms in the Winter.

My Rocket 88 antenna for 6 - 80 Meters came down a week before Field Day weekend of 2017 after a rope snapped in a storm. I bought myself a new end fed antenna made by My Antennas dot com with a 9:1 unun and 53 feet of wire for 6 - 160 Meters. We built an ugly balun with 21 feet of RG-58 coax cable with help from WA1JKR, N1UIR and KB1TBL for my new antenna and put two ferrite bead RF chokes on the radio end of my new run of 160 feet of RG-58 coax cable for 160 Meter use. My new end fed antenna went up into the trees on Tuesday, July 25, 2017. I am now back on the air on HF!!
