Biography

First licensed with the Novice call of KN1LHO in June, 1959. Been very active for several decades. My interests are primarily HF rag chewing, RTTY, and more recently in the new digital modes like FT8. I started in this mode about thirty years ago with a model 15 teletype, and moved to computers when the new technology appeared in the 80's. I have used most all digital modes, but pretty much stay with RTTY or FT8 on HF. I rag chew in SSB, but do some CW although I cheat with a computer screen. I can copy about 20wpm.

I have been active in the Meriden Amateur Radio Club since 1974. Although I have been a member of other clubs over the years, MARC has been my home.

After getting a few certificates many years ago, I ceased paper chasing, and saw no need to prove anything to anyone, and only operate for fun. If I work a DX station, this is great, but I don't chase them. I like to work contests, but seldom submit logs. Now with the existence of LoTW, I do submit logs.

I occasionally check into the local repeater, W1KKF 147.36/96 and some other local repeaters.
In addition I am active in VOIP modes like Echolink, DMR and D-Star. I now operate mobile with these modes using my cellphone over the internet, and Bluetooth to connect the vehicle audio system. This makes it legal. My friends keep telling me this isn't ham radio. I guess I can always go back to my 75 watt crystal controlled notice station of 1959.... I also have been doing a lot of CW contesting. I must confess though I use CW Get and a memory keyer. We'll keep that a secret in case we QSO. My picture is also goes back a while....(circa 1967)

Equipment

I have a pretty simple station at this time. I am using an Icom IC-7100 transceiver barefoot at 100 watts into Comet 240 vertical antenna. Operate QRP on a Heathkit HW-8 CW rig with 3 watts.
