Biography

Hi and thanks for visiting my page.

I have been a ham since May of 1971. I was originally license as WNØERQ (Novice) and then held Advanced Class licenses WBØERQ, WB9NTA and WBØYIU. In December of 1987, after 3 attempts at the 20 wpm code test, I finally got my Extra Class license but retained the WBØYIU call sign.

In 2005 my uncle, who was responsible for my careers in ham radio and Electrical Engineering, passed away so I obtained his call sign, KØLAF, as a way to memorialize him.

In the winter of 2007/2008, we had a series of ice storms and high winds that brought down all of my antennas. The picture below shows what was left of the tribander after the other antennas had fallen. Not long after this picture was taken, these parts were lying on the ground also. I put up a G5RV antenna for HF and a Jetstream vertical for VHF/UHF just to get back on the air.

In December of 2016 I took the G5RV out of service and replaced it with an EFHW-8010 from MyAntennas.com with a center height of 20 feet.
