Biography

Rainy days require naps as you might have noticed with the pic in the upper right corner of my page. This is Destiny. She is a registered Lynx Point Himalayan. She acts as my alarm clock in a very unpleasant manner and at ridiculous time of the morning. 0530 hours is the time for a lick on the nose and forehead telling me it's her breakfast time and to get out of bed and prepare her raw chicken breast morning treat. I didn't opt for this beast but she was gifted to me and now we've become pals. She is great company considering I live in the rain forest in the Republic of Panama...Yes Central America. I'm a transplant from Florida and former sailor/racer/boat service/delivery captain. Now retired and enjoying life in the jungle. I live off grid where we collect rain water for daily use. One of the really wonderful features is I have perfect electrical power and no noise floor making it easy to pull out those light signals. I was first licensed in May 1952 as a Novice and my dislike for code prompted me to upgrade to Advanced in September 1952. Losing track of time and forgetting to renew my Advanced required me to test in 2015 to get a new call sign. Since I have lots of time to play I wanted to dig out my old FT-900AT and see if it would talk. The 900 resided for many years aboard my sailboat and it still lights up and transmits. My base unit is a FT-920AT driving a small solid state PA connected to a variety of wire antennas.. I really enjoy experimenting with antennas. Thus far I'm really enjoying being back on air and meeting lots of new friends. Many of the old friends I made are now silent key. At my age I'm extremely blessed just to wake up on the green side. After arriving in Panama in 2007 on my sailboat I set about building Harmony House in Discovery Hills on Isla Solarte in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago. I got a bit sidetracked with assisting other owners in Discovery Bay/Hills in their construction projects. I oversaw the construction of ten homes and one of the ten became a bit neglected due to the demands of those I was helping. I just recently in 2015 have again begun work on Harmony House which is named after the Tortishell Persian kitty that lived aboard with me on Gone With The Wind. I have a web site that has been poorly maintained as I'm not very good with building and maintaining the site. You can find this at www.discoveryhills.net if you are at all interested. All homes are totally self sufficient...off grid. Living on a sailboat for eleven years was good preparation for dealing with off the grid living and I love having total control of my water and electrical requirements. I met some really nice Amateurs on the Spider Web Net...14.347. There is a morning session officially from 1230-1330Z (we are often on in the early portion at 1130Z). There is also an evening session that begins at 2230Z and runs to 2400. The evening session began as the Spider Web Net Cooking Show and we do talk about cooking in the evening but it is very casual and includes general rag chew. Everyone is welcome, so please stop by and say hello. Thanks for the visit. Hope to make your aquaintance soon. You're only passing this way but once, so do it today as there may not be a tomorrow. Capt. Ron..Formerly a 500GT Master/Retired.
