Biography

A QS1R SDR receiver runs skimmer for the Reverse Beacon Network. The antenna is a re-furbished Cushcraft R7 (7 band 40-10m) electrically half wave end fed vertical with base at 3.5m agl. I live in a semi-rural area so the noise level is not too bad. The position of the antenna is favourable to NE and NW (Asia and North America) however not so good to the South East.
Prior to 12/April/2020 I was using my 2 element tri band (20/15/10) antenna at 10m agl.

First licenced at 17 years old in 1974, I am on HF, mainly CW, home (also V/UHF), portable or marine mobile. /MM is always from a sailing boat, maximum length 14m. Sometimes I have to cut a QSO short without explanation to attend to the boat. Sorry if this happens.

I have run WSPR 500mW on 20m into a mobile 1m long whip while sailing in the Caribbean in a 13.7m sailing boat, Antigua to BVI, then across the Atlantic via the Azors to Plymouth in the UK. The transmitter was a QRP labs unit with GPS.

I enjoy contests, usually with the Verulam Amateur Radio Club (VARC). I am also a member of the RSGB, CDXC, GQRP Clubs. I am a Committee member of VARC.

My main home equipment is an FTDX10. Ourside of home I mainly use an Icom 7000, KX2, KX1, or FT817 for /m /p and /mm.

I have LOTW only at the moment and do not collect cards.
