Biography
I was first licensed in August 1970, whilst still at school in Salisbury, Wilts.
Studied engineering at Cambridge University from 1971 to 1974, and was an active member of CUWS (G6UW).
After graduating I moved to Suffolk, working at the BT Research Labs at Martlesham Heath. I was a member of the Martlesham Radio Society (G4BPO, then G4MRS) and the Ipswich Radio Club (G4IRC) at a time when we had some great success in contests - particularly VHF/UHF.
I did a stint as Chairman of the RSGB VHF Committee, and also represented the RSGB at several IARU Conferences, majoring on VHF matters.
Moving to the current QTH in the Chiltern Hills, ham radio took a bit of a back seat for many years, with much of the kit packed away in the loft. Re-emerging after the long hiatus I found that technology had moved on a pace, and yet the old analogue kit could still hold its own.
