Biography

Christopher Denton-Powell G7FBJ to G0MRR in 1989
My best set up was in North Devon where I had my Cushcraft A4S with 40M add on kit.
Now retired I have limited space for Radio equipment and antennas inside and out.
Making the best with my 1788x and end fed wire. QSL via my web site: WWW.G0MRR.COM

My grandfather was J J Denton his experimental licence was DXV in 1900s He was always called JJ. (Joseph John) Joseph obviously used his second name, John and he preferred to be known by that! It is recorded that J J Denton was an electrical engineer with the Hasting Municipal Corporation and also the first Honorary Secretary of the Hastings Radio Society.

We know so very little about our grandfather, or grandmother for that matter! Our father died in 1950. Chris and I were aged 6 years and 8 years respectively and Janet was 17 years. We knew that our grandparents had divorced since our grandmother had remarried a Captain Powell RN. Hence, our father's surname became Denton-Powell.
Francis Kingsley Denton-Powell (J.J. Denton’s Son) had a sister called Brenda she married and became Brenda Watson, we think she was also a Denton-Powell not a Powell. Janet (my sister) says that our father had been told that his real father had died when he was very young. However, she remembers that shortly before his death in 1950 He found out the truth by reading an obituary. He had only just past on. JJ Denton's death is believed to be around 1949. It would appear from pictures that JJ never remarried and spent a great deal of time with his niece Leoni Denton.
After our fathers death, none of us had any communication with our father's mother; we were told that our grandfather was dead also. We don't know why this situation existed, on both counts. None of us ever questioned why! Our Mother never spoke about these things and as respectful children we never questioned her.
Regarding JJ Denton's contribution to the establishment of the telephone and TV in the UK, our mother always spoke proudly of his great achievements. Frank was given a book, circa 1938, called "Television Today" written in parts by him it had a reddish wine coloured cover of some quality and we browsed through the pages many times when we were younger. What is more interesting, Frank has in his possession, some papers written to JJ Denton by Si Edward Appleton, circa 1898, about hertz waves tests on the Sussex downs, and also from Oliver J Lodge. Also a letter written to S G Denton with reference to Mercury thermometers, circa 1900 This may have been his brother.

So you will see its no surprise that I love my RADIO. More on www.g0mrr.com including a letter in 1900 from Sir Oliver J Lodge Re: : Hertz waves
