Biography

got my start in radio in 1978......my mom got me a shortwave radio.....hallicrafters s-53a i think......i'd know it if i saw it....then, a scoutmaster was building a heathkit code practice oscillator from a kit......he hooked me up with a ham in Morenci, AZ....built the kit, then got to listening on 7 mhz to code practice from W1AW......took the novice test in 1979.....passed the code with the 25 letters in a row.....but flunked the theory...kept listening, and then a fellow playmate got a hold of a two-watt radio shack walkie-talkie, and i talked to a guy in alabama from arizona....two watts.....am....from a top of a twin bunk bed.....i was hooked....we moved to montana in 1979....then discovered an ad in the paper about a ham radio club in Butte, MT.....met up with a guy who was/is a morse code genius.....early 1980.....got some mentoring from him and went to a field day.....later that year.....i passed the novice test.....thanks to W7DB and W7OIO, and another ham whose call escapes me, and W7JYW (now KS7T)...who helped me get on the air.....had a general at the time (gary cash) help me with my first cw contact (80m) from the club station (W7FO) with my call (KA7GVI)....then i got an hw-8 for xmas in '80, and on occasion, would op from W7JYW's QTH in the Novice Roundup, and during contests....in the novice band of course....while he was at work....within months, i was good enough to go it on my own....and did several multi ops with fred (ks7t now) until i moved to texas in '84.....was inactive until 1989, got a used swan 350d for 150 bux from kb5jjb....built a pvc vertical, and was back on the air....and amassed 86 or 96 countries before upgrading to general, then extra a few months later....but i should have waited and tried for the coveted Novice DXCC...was KA5VOZ untill 1991 or 92, then AB5ZA.....was in texas till 1999...then oklahoma till 2005.....then moved back home to montana after my fathers' cancer diagnosis....i am an AVID CW operator.....enjoy QRP/Solar ham radio....and have a few QRP wins from the early 2000's from oklahoma....operate almost everyday.....rare to see me on SSB or other modes....just enjoy CW too much......also had a DX-40 and a knight VFO in the early 80's....along with my s-53a......that got me on 10m cw...ex KA7GVI, KA5VOZ....100% QSL w/SASE, to any Calls (AB5ZA/KA5VOZ/KA7GVI)...lost some years of contacts w/computer crash while converting from paper to electronic....never again.....

Equipment

Kenwood TS-440SAT, Elecraft K1, Yeasu FT-747, pure sine wave inverter, solar power, a borrowed TEN-TEC Omni D, old Ameritron AL-84 amp (300-500w depending on band, mainly used in contests).....most of the time, barefoot or solar power and my lil K1....and a motorcycle battery.....have wire antennas only here....inv. vees for 10/15/20/30/40......long wire for 80/160....with a MFJ-962D antenna tuner for 80/160....i hate tuners, cuz i ain't had nuthin but problems with them, but is necessary for my limited real estate.....but my SWR is under 2:1 on most bands, and do use the long wire for 160/80/17/12 meters....have a tower, rotor, and an A4S, but will have to wait till spring to get that up and going.....also have AlinCo DM-330MV p/s, and a Harris power supply in the guest room, where the K1/27mhx/shortwave radio/test/2mtrFM stuff is.....the k1 has proven to be a damned good rig.....smokin' lil receiver this thing has.....and it will drive the AL-84 amp 5-6 watts in......nets 50-100 watts depending on the band.....finished a contest with the lil k1.....i would buy any of Elecraft's stuff.....gud stuff......but do love old tube gear.....and occasionally SWL reception.....when i'm bored with stateside radio stations.....
