Biography

In the mid 1970’s I caught the S.W.L bug becoming absolutely fascinated as I “read the mail” from the far flung corners of the globe listening to Radio Ham’s sharing stories about their exotic home QTH’s be it a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean or a remote outpost in the vast open Deserts of 1001 Arabian nights.

My world atlas became my best friend as I traced the “Ham” call signs to a physical location and so infectious was my desire to join the ranks of this mysterious fraternity that I learnt the secret art of Morse code long before I was licenced.

After passing the class "A" City & Guilds Amateur Radio exams I reserved the call sign G4UTD and waited an eternity for the RSGB to issue the call sign which was finally released in 1981.

Subsequently I relocated to Africa during which time I have traveled around the world enjoying the natural wonders and diversified cultures that so captivated me during my early S.W.L days.

Leisure time is now spent on “safari” and convincing the XYL that visiting places like 5X ,A22, C8, 9G, 9X,9J2, Z2, V5A, 3DA, HS, S6A and 9M2 to name a few would be great destinations for a vacation with the added bonus of a little DX on the side and thus the list of countries that I’ve now operated from continues to grow.

Located next to Lake Victoria and the Western edge of the Serengeti I hope you enjoy the photographs of my home QTH https://www.qrz.com/db/5H9GB and its surrounding environment.
