Biography

Welcome, Croeso, Bienvenido, Willkommen, Benvenuto, Velkommen :-)
Hi, I am a guy in his mid 60's from Telford in Central England. I have had a keen interest in radio since the early 1970's, however I never got around to getting my amateur licence until 2019.
I quickly found that living in a built-up area gave me a S9 noise level on HF so SSB was really a nonstarter for all but the most powerful stations, this led me to FT8 and FT4 and found that even a FT-817 with its 5 watts out would give quite good results.
In October 2020 I gained my Intermediate licence and upgraded to a Icom-756 and though it was a nice radio it was a constant battle to keep it talking to the PC which led me to trading it in for a FT-991a. This allowed me up to 100 watts on HF and 50 watts on VHF/UHF.
I have continued to play with FT4/8 though I also have another rig monitoring 145.500 FM, especially for POTA or SOTA Calls.
Future plans, Hope to have more computer modes up and running soon with SSTV and RTTY being at the top of the list, along with finally obtaining my “full” licence which will give me yet another new call sign !
October2025 New rules. With a new computer system now up and running licence holders with 2E calls are being encouraged to change them to M8 or M9 but this also means dropping any previous calls, hence giving M7DJN a bit of a final blast during October 2025 with quite pleasing results given the 25 watt power restriction.
