Hero : Athanasios Diakos

Athanasios Nikolaos Grammatikos or Massavetas (1788 – 24 April 1821) also known as Athanasios Diakos was a Greek military commander during the Greek War of Independence, considered a venerable national hero in Greece.

He was the son of a farmer from Mousounitsa village. He was born in 1788 in Ano Mousounitsa or in Artotina village in Fokida. At the age of 12 he was sent by his mother to the Monastery of Timios Prodromos to learn letters and became a nun. Due to his abilities and virtue, he was ordained a young deacon at the age of 17.

Later in October 1820 he led the revolution of Levadia, became a member of the "Filiki Etairia" and began to negotiate for the Greek Revolution. On March 27, 1821, Athanasios Diakos spearheaded the proclamation of the Revolution in Eastern Central Greece (Monastery of Saint Luke), after consultation with the Achaeans, who had revolted a week earlier and managed to recruit 5,000 villagers by his side.

In April 1821, in collaboration with other leaders of the Greek revolution, he captured the fortress of Livadia and using it as a base, gave many victorious battles, liberating Atalanti, Thebes and then all of Boeotia area.

When a large Ottoman army, with 8,000 soldiers and 1,000 cavalry led by Omer Vryonis, moved against the revolted Greeks of Roumeli in order to suppress the uprising there and then move on to the revolted Peloponnese, Diakos with his few men is giving there the heroic but unequal "battle of Alamana"

Omer Vryonis ordered him to be made a senior officer if he converted, but he replied: "I was born Greek and I will die Greek".

Athanasios Diakos bravely faced his torturous death on April 24, 1821 when the epilogue of the glorious battle of Alamana was written.

The death of Diakos shocked and at the same time enlivened the Greek fighters.

Athanasios Diakos had strong faith in Jesus Christ and testified for Him and his homeland at the age of 33, just like Him.

( Many tnx to SV3SPC )
