Biography

Gorodets is one of the oldest Russian cities on the Volga. It’s located 375 km to the North-East of Moscow and 45 km to the North-West of Nizhny Novgorod city. On the Volga River, Gorodets is located near the lock of the Gorky Reservoir, on the opposite bank from the city of Zavolzhye. Originally, Gorodets was built as a fortress to protect the borders of the state, but from the 18th century it developed as a center of grain tradeand wooden shipbuilding. The city is famous for its beautiful paintingsand woodcarvings. The emblem of Gorodets depicts a golden boat on the crest of a wave.
