This station opened in March 5th 1866 on the new Southampton to Netley Line. It was originally named Bitterne Road Station, as it was situated at the bottom of Lance's Hill about a mile away from Bitterne village. It was renamed Bitterne Station in 1896.

The station itself is located a mile west of Bitterne village, although original plans for railway line would have seen the railway pass right through the centre of the village.

The station building and waiting room was boarded up along with the platform access Gents Toilet and lamp room. The Parcel Shed platform access is fenced off along with the station. The station is now being restored to its former glory.

This is by the Friends of Bitterne Railway Station Bitterne Station Community Hub.

It is also the Club QTH For the Southampton Amateur Radio Club
