Klaipėda is the third largest Lithuanian city in terms of population and area located in Western Lithuania on the coastal plain, at the confluence of the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. The city is also the administrative center of Klaipėda Region.
The history of the city is complicated. In 1252 the castle of the Livonian Order was built on the site of the old Curonian settlement where the city was located. Later the city belonged to the Teutonic Order, the Duchy of Prussia, the Kingdom of Prussia and Germany. After the First World War, according to the Treaty of Versailles, Klaipėda and Klaipėda region were separated from Germany. After Klaipėda uprising in 1923, the territory was returned to Lithuania. In 1939 after the ultimatum issued by the Germans, Klaipėda was again occupied by Germany. And in 1945 the city and Klaipėda region were occupied by the Soviet Union.
In 1990 after the restoration of Lithuania's independence, the city's economic development was greatly encouraged by foreign investors, including such large companies as Philip Morris, Siemens, Radisson SAS, etc. In 2005 Klaipėda was home of 20 largest, from one hundred, Lithuanian investors. In 1997 a free economic zone has been established in Klaipėda.
Culture developed. Based on the recommendations of Šiauliai Teachers University and Klaipėda Conservatory, in 1991 the university of Klaipėda and international LCC were founded. They became cultural and scientific centers of Western Lithuania. In 2014 Klaipėda was visited by 64 cruise ships. According to this indicator the Latvian capital Riga was overtaken for the first time.
The pride of the city is a ditinctive and cosy old-town, the historical Theatre Square with a famous sculpture of Tarava Anike, the unique Clock& Watches Museum and the carillon in the Post Office Tower, the Marine Museum & Aquarium, the Dolphinarium as well as the picturesque nature of the Curonian Spit created by sea, wind and hands of people.
