Biography

Hello Everyone.

My name is Ray G Lyell. I live in Southern Illinois in a small town called Johnston City in the USA. JC, as it's called, is about 5 miles East of my hometown of Herrin. I have a nice 30 acre rural piece of land that is quiet and great for my Shortwave listening. I was born in December 1966. I have been married to my wife Grace for 25 years. I have been listening to Shortwave Radio since I was 16 years old back in 1983. Before that I used to talk on the CB Radio. I had a Cobra 1000GTL Base station with D-104 with Antron 99 antenna. When I'm not listening to my Shortwave radios, I do quite a bit of cycling to stay in shape. I used to race but not so much anymore.

My other favorite hobby is Amateur Astronomy. I've been doing that since I was about 10 years old. I have a big 12 inch DOB reflector Telescope and a case full of lenses and filters. Also had a letter published from NASA during the last Hubble mission back in 2009. I also collected data during the total eclipse we had in August 2017.

Other longtime interests include Music I have a pretty large record album and CD collection. Computers, Reading different tech and astronomy books. Also Bowling. To everyone visiting my page, Thank You and good listening.

Surfing The Shortwaves since 1983.

My antennas are the Alpha Delta DX-Ultra and DXE RF-PRO-1B Magnetic Loop. The DX-Ultra is mounted on a hill in my backfield. The Magnetic loop is on a 12-foot mast by my house. The center of the DX-Ultra is about 30 feet high with 3 multi-length wires on each side sloping down to support poles about 11 feet tall. The total width of the antenna is 80 feet. It is fed to my house with 140 feet of RG-8X buried in PVC underground.
