Biography

Ham Radio...... What a great friend!

When I was about 5yrs old, I developed a love for SWL at a very early age; we had a Zenith Transoceanic that I played around with. I listened to it for hours and can still remember fiddling around with it and looking in the back to see how it worked. I was fascinated by the strange sounds that came out of it. I spent many hours tuning around the bands.

At about 10 yrs old I went to visit a cousin that lived in town and there was a ham that lived across the street from her. I remember one summer day while I was outside I could hear SSB signals coming from his garage, so like a bullet I was I was hanging around asking a lot of questions. This fellow was in high school at the time and was kind enough to let me come in a watch while he explained his hobby. I was hooked but never got around to getting a license.

I had an Uncle that was the general manager of Radio station KVSO in Ardmore, OK and during my visits as a teenager I was in Heaven digging around and looking at all the transmitters and equipment. That’s when I decided that I wanted to be a radio engineer and went to school at OSU in Okmulgee for electronics, at that time it was a technical collage. I soon took the 1st Class Radiotelephone License test at the FCC office in Dallas and passed it. My First and last Job in radio was at KLPR AM and KJAK FM as the morning DJ and Chief Engineer, It was the worst job I have ever had, not the work, but the pay.

I still had a fascination with Ham Radio and sometime in the late 70’s I passed my Technician. I spent many years trying to learn the code and 7 years later I upgraded to General class by passing 13wpm code test administered in Dallas by the FCC. Barely passing it I have struggled with Morse code for decades and still do. I gave up on the Hobby about 20 yrs. ago and just had the rigs in a box until a friend at work decided to get his license after he passed his General class and I knew that he was studying for his Extra class and I wasn’t about to let him get ahead of my with a higher class license, so I started studying for my extra and I passed my Extra Class a week before he did just last year. I just bought my second ever new Ham rig an entry level Icom IC-7300 and have been enjoying all the new modes, wow what a radio. This is a great Hobby. It’s just me and my Golden retriever most nights listening and talking to the great people of this hobby. I love building antennas and I am running a converted G5RV now called a ZS6BKW that works fairly well but want to try some end-fed halfwaves.

Since the outbreak of SARS-CoVid-2 otherwise known as CoVid19, I have been blessed to have a Ham License. I can't imagine going through this lockdown without it. I sit and listen to all of the conversations going on thoughout the country and feel blessed to be able to listen and talk to others as we all go through this terrible time.

I am wanting an Amplifier but can't afford to buy one. Too Many meds to buy every MONTH!
So If you have an extra I sure wouldn't turn it down. I can pay shipping. This seems like a cheesy thing to put on your equipment list, but the truth is the truth. You never know someone might have sympathy and hook me up. Thought I would give it a try.
