Biography

"Chip" Jarman W6HCD

2022 Field Operation - Salton Sea Burning Sands Radiorama - March 7-10, 2022 Preparation is in the works for a remote field operation commemorating my first Burning Sands field event operated July of 2007 from Osborne Lookout in the Imperial Sand Dunes near Glamis, CA. (See photo below of Mallard trailer at Osborne Lookout.) Bands will be HF/VHF/UHF. Modes will be SSB/FM/DSTAR.

The location for this op will be at the shore of the Salton Sea in Salton City, CA. Stay tuned.

2019 End of the Year Update: Bringing the station up after a 4-year hiatus. In addition to the setup mentioned below I am now in the process of developing two new modes of communication which I have wanted to do for a long time - satellite communications and D-Star Gateway using my new Icom 51A Plus 2 and the incredible IC-9700. I will begin learning satellite ops in the portable mode with the Arrow II 146/437-10WBP. Once I have learned the ropes running portable satellite ops, I will begin work on my ground station satellite antennas as well as pursuing EME work.

Antenna installed for D-Star & SoCal repeaters VHF/UHF is Diamond X300 dual band vertical up 30 ft. From my location I am able to work off 51 SoCal analog repeaters and 4 D-Star digital repeaters. I am able to work some satellites with this antenna but because it is vertical, the best signals are between 10-45 degrees elevation. Using the Ham Radio Deluxe software to track satellites. It is interfaced with the IC-9700 and continuously adjusts the RCV and XMT frequencies to correct for doppler effect.

Antenna for HF is Cushcraft MA5V vertical multi-band up 20 ft.

VHF/UHF HT's are ID-51A Plus 2, IC-92AD, IC-2GAT. HF rig is IC-751A, HF/VHF/UHF rig is FT-897D, VHF/UHF rig is IC-9700.

I am also in the process of requesting a new callsign. KC6OOE is my original Technician callsign I recieved when I got my ticket back in 1991. (I was MARS Chief operator aboard the USS LONG BEACH CGN-9.)

SPECIAL UPDATE ON MY CALLSIGN: On Christmas Eve 2019, the FCC granted me my new callsign W6HCD.

I have requested the callsign of my sister's godfather and the person who taught me ham radio, Nash Williams W6HCD. He was also a classmate of my father at the Naval Academy back in 1932. He passed away over a decade ago and I think it would be an honor to have his callsign, especially since it is the same class and location I am in.

Note on my Power Out: I have never used anything more than barefoot 100 watts max with my HF rigs, the IC-751A and the Yaesu FT-897, and usually operate on average at 50 watts for any xmit anywhere around the world. My preferred mode of operartion is LSB RTTY on 20 meters using the AEA PK-232MBX with the PCPAKRATT II software. I also have the Kantronics TNC but it is more difficult to use than the PK-232.

AS OF SUNDAY FEB. 8, 2014, KC6OOE is back on the air, QTH JULIAN, CA in the Pine Hills of the Volcan Mtns. above San Diego, CA. HF is currently up all modes, all bands RTTY/AMTOR/PACKET and VOX. HF antenna is multi band vertial Cushcraft MA5VRB only up 20 ft due to using temporary mast until tower can be installed. VHF antenna is 2m Cushcraft J-pole AR-2 up 35 ft for reaching nodes/repeaters on Mt. Palomar. First QSO at new site was with K4VV RTTY on 20 meters. Thanks Mike for checks and balances!

As of 27 April 2011, the new QTH is Hawthorne, NV.

Working on the test range as a Comms/IT/ Info Security Tech.

NOTE: As of 02 JAN 09 kc6ooe base is now located at San Clemente Is. 62 nm offshore Southern Calif. 32.59.75N 118.33.32W alt. 551 ft [visit kc6ooe.com for station info]

Note: Jan 07, 2009 Station KC6OOE will be returning to Black Rock City late August for Burning Man 2009.

Initially Chief MARS Op USS LONG BEACH CGN-9 1989. Received first ham ticket prior to deployment 1990. Along with NAVMARS Ops Whidbey Island WA, Norfolk VA, USS ABE LINCOLN, and USS FORRESTAL developed Navy's first worldwide email forwarding system for forces afloat utilizing AMTOR digital teletype, the Afloat Net Traffic System (ANTS). Retired from US Navy July 4th, 2002. My hobby is digital HF communications in the field. Operated from dozens of remote locations afloat and ashore around the world and around the states.

ADDENDUM: UPDATE JULY 4, 2007: I will be conducting a field event station at the 2007 Burning Man Festival from Black Rock City, Neveda August 27 thru Sep 3rd.

In preparation for this event I will be conducting a 5-day field operating site from the Imperial Sand Dunes in Southeastern CA. July 18th thru 22nd.

HF antenna on RV is Buddipole mounted onto a TV rotator. QTH is Osborne Lookout, Imperial Sand Dunes.

May 14, 2004 update: I will be working a remote station from the Del Mar Beach RV campground at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base for the ARRL FIELD DAY June 26-27, 2004. I am currently setting up a KC6OOE.com website for live pictures and QSL's currently located at: www.kc6ooe.com .

I expect to be working HF RTTY/AMTOR/HF PACKET 10-20 meters. See you there!

ALSO: May 1-2, 2004 Sat & Sun ~ Associazione Radioamatori Italiani (ARI) Int'l RTTY DX Contest. I will be working 10-20 Meters from my home base station. I will be on the air Friday night April 30 from 1800-2330 PDT conducting QSO's.
